| Fire heavily damaged a vacant Manhattan
farmhouse on Highway 24 Tuesday morning.
The fire at 7530 E. Highway 24 was reported at 10:30
a.m. by a passing motorist. The house, which had no occupant, was
built in 1906 to replace a house destroyed by a flood the same year.
According to fire officials, witnesses report that vagrants
had been using the house, which is barely visible from the highway.
A vagrant was seen leaving shortly before the fire was
reported to authorities, officials said. |
| The origin of the fire was in an upstairs
closet, where it is suspected that a fire had been built for
warmth or cooking. The entire upper floor was destryoed; damage
estimates are set at $50,000. The fire is listed as
"suspicious" in nature.
Units from Blue Township Fire-Rescue and the
Manhattan Fire Department initially responded. The Riley
County Fire Department and St. George Fire Department also provided help. |
