Unconsciousness

Unconsciousness can be caused by an injury (including a fall, accident, or collision) or an illness or medical emergency such as diabetes, epilepsy, heart attack, drug overdose, poisoning, or shock.

The person will be unresponsive to shouts or attempts to rouse him or her.

Immediate care Call out for someone to get help, or call 911 yourself. Check airway, breathing, and circulation. Loosen any tight-fitting clothing. Treat the injury or illness that caused the unconsciousness. If the person is diabetic and can be aroused, administer sugar. If you do not suspect a back or neck injury, place the person in the most comfortable position based on the injury or illness. Keep the person warm and stay with him or her until medical help arrives.

IF THIS IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
