Blue Township to host open house

The Blue Township fire-rescue squad will host an open house Sunday that will include a demonstration of the jaws of life'' rescue tool.
Firefighters will also conduct a simulated search and rescue'' through a tunnel of fire, and will present junior firefighter activities designed to teach children a skill.

The events, scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m., are free and open to the public and will be held at Station One at 3503 Scottie Lane, one block south of U.S. 24, about two miles east of Manhattan.

The department is composed of about 20 volunteers.

As part of Sunday's event, the department will conduct a chili feed in order to raise money for the purchase of new paging equipment. Department wives and volunteers will serve chili from 1 to 3 p.m. Tickets are $3.50 for adults and $2 for children.

Ticket stubs will also make purchasers eligible for door prizes.

There's no use to have a volunteer if you can't get a message to him or her where the fire is,'' said Eric Ward, chief of the volunteer service, on the need for new pagers.

He characterized the event as an opportunity for people to meet the volunteers that serve the township area, consisting of approximately 55 square miles in size east and northeast of Manhattan.
