Car-truck accident along US 24 injures two

Two men were injured, one seriously, in a two-car, major-damage accident this morning at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Flush Road. The accident caused traffic to back up for several miles during heavy traffic time on U.S. 24.

At about 9:10 a.m., Dan Darkow, 41, of South Dakota, was traveling east on U.S. 24 in a red 1997 Cadillac when he was struck broad-side on the driver's side by a 1995 Ford F150 pickup driven by Tom Duncan, 69, of Westmoreland.
Duncan had been traveling south on Flush Road, and had slowed in the median to about 10 to 15 mph before continuing to cross the intersection, Duncan said.

Duncan sustained minor injuries, mostly from abrasions caused by the airbag. He said he was not wearing his seat belt, and that he "hadn't even seen" the approaching car. Duncan seemed visibly shaken, but refused treatment from the Wamego EMS at the scene. His vehicle had major damage to the front bumper.

Darkow, who had been wearing his seatbelt, had more serious injuries, but they were not considered life-threatening according to emergency personnel who treated him at the scene. He was transported by Wamego EMS to the Wamego City Hospital.

Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Department Deputy Michael Weimer said Darkow had said he had locked his cruise-control at 70 mph shortly before he was struck by Duncan's truck. Darkow's vehicle spun and came to a rest about 300 feet away from the impact site.

The entire driver's side of Darkow's vehicle was crushed in, but the interior was not damaged. Both airbags had deployed.

Along with the PCSD, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Blue Township Fire Department, St. George Fire Department and Wamego EMS responded to the scene.

No citations were issued at the scene; however, Weimer confirmed that Darkow had the right of way at the intersection. The accident is still under investigation.

According to Kansas Department of Transportation records, there have been four accidents reported at this intersection, three of which involved injuries. Statistics so far for 2000 are not yet available from KDOT .
